Pergola Attached to House Ideas
A pergola that is attached to a house offers a more robust design and is sometimes easier to build as you can use the house wall as a roof support on on side of the pergola. But not every house will be a good fit for an attached pergola. Plus, you somewhat limit yourself in terms of a location for your pergola. Maybe you prefer a more secluded location away from the house. It depends on what the purpose of a pergola is. If you would like to entertain your guests under a pergola then having it attached is the way to go, as this places your pergola in the closest proximity to the kitchen where you’ll be serving dishes and drinks from. Also, providing electricity and lights to the attached pergola is much easier than to a stand-alone pergola somewhere in the backyard. I have an attached pergola and I love it.
An attached pergola with two partial lattice walls, built on a slightly raised platform.
An attached pergola with lights and curtains is accessible via a sliding patio door.
I think this pergola design is carefully selected to make the square cells of lattice enclosures match the rectangular profiles of the bricks on the wall.
A large patio affords a large pergola! This design has a modern look to it.
I love the stain color on this pergola, and the lattice panels look gorgeous. The pergola’s color blends beautifully with slate patio tile while creating a nice contrast with the white walls of the house.
The designs above and below are two very sophisticated, modern pergola styles that incorporate black elements, square cell enclosures, and a solid roof.
The above design shows how you can turn a rudimentary skirting enclosure into an integral part of the pergola design.
Pergolas Enclosed with Square Cell Lattice
Square cell lattice is my favorite outdoor element. I would use it everywhere if given the chance. It exudes a modern feel.
Love the above pergola idea for its masculine design and elongated profile. Using such thick lumber for the posts and seat supports is a clever idea. It gives the design a very sophisticated and reliable feel. Of course, the cost of this lumber has to be justified. But from a practical standpoint, this design is not for every backyard, as it requires more space while not offering an ideal setup for conversation.
I really like the pergola idea above. A strong, cubic structure enclosed with square-cell walls, complemented by a surround-style seating area. Having square cells against the cubic shape makes this design stylish.
A nice patio pergola with a comfortable seating area.
A unique and very cool design with one of the four supports removed.
Wow. This design exudes strength and durability.
Love, love, love the idea of an elongated pergola with the longest side enclosed.
Square cell lattice brings sophistication to this design.
The designs above and below are very modern minimalist, and are very elegant for a pergola.

Notice how this modern pergola design has one side slightly shorter.
A cozy pergola with comfy sitting.
A modern idea for a simple pergola design.
This design exudes a sense of luxury.
Love the idea of arched openings in the wall enclosures. A very elegant design!

Glass Pergola Ideas
Glass-enclosed pergolas are in their own category. They compete with glass greenhouses.
Pergola Ideas with Curtains
Using curtains is the cheapest way to add some privacy to your pergola.

Pergola on Deck Ideas
The most important difference between building a pergola on a deck vs. building a pergola on a patio is how the pergola is anchored. On a deck, the pergola must be securely attached to the deck’s framing, as the deck itself is elevated and may not provide a solid enough base for heavy vertical posts. This often requires reinforcing the deck structure to support the additional weight and prevent swaying. On a patio, the pergola posts are anchored directly into the ground or concrete, providing a much more stable support.
Pergolas with Diamond Lattice
Diamond cell lattice adds a rustic touch to a pergola.
Love this pergola idea – it looks more like a nook, a secret nook hidden inside the garden.
